Each case is different so there is no set formula to determine the cost of a case. Determining the cost is often based on a number of factors including the complexity of the case, what the charges are, the end result the client is hoping to achieve. This is why the initial consultation is important as it gives me an opportunity to learn what result each client is looking for. The initial consultation is free.
Once the issues are determined and what the client’s intentions are, the appropriate fee for the case can be determined.
I generally work on a “block fee” basis which covers all the services that are needed to defend your case such as set date appearances, reviewing the disclosure, telephone meetings with the Crown, and appearing for a trial and/or preliminary hearing. There are never hidden fees. Fee agreements are clearly set out in writing. Bail hearings, bail reviews, and/or bail variation applications often require additional payment.
I generally do not charge for mileage, accommodation, or travel unless the case is far outside the Greater Toronto Area.
Hourly rates are possible if requested by the client though it is almost always in the best interests of the client to select the “block fee” option. It provides a sense of comfort knowing exactly how much the case will be.
Legal Aid is accepted for many types of charges. Toronto legal aid is a great resource for those individuals who are not able to afford a lawyer.
Payment plans can be arranged but usually must be paid before the end of the case. Depending on your individual circumstances, we can arrange a payment plan that fits your needs.
Accepted forms of payment are: Cash, Visa, Mastercard, Interac, Cheque / Money Order
